This is purely to subsidise part of the additional cost of the preparation of your Multi-Compartment Compliance Aid, which is a service that is not funded at all by the NHS.
Preparation of a Multi-Compartment Compliance Aid takes up to 30 times the equivalent of dispensing the medication in its original boxes, as well as requiring additional costs for software, the packaging and staffing. Under the existing Pharmacy Contract with the NHS, pharmacies receive no payment for this service and hence without this contribution make a significant loss on providing this service to any patients.
Previously, pharmacies have absorbed these costs, however the real terms 25-30% cut in funding of pharmacy services since 2015 mean that this is no longer sustainable. We hope that in future the NHS will properly fund this service, so that we can again provide this fee-free to patients.
